• About the CLP
KUALA LUMPUR: The Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) will soon be scrapped in favour of the Common Bar Course (CBC) and Common Bar Exam (CBE), Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said.
Citing that a study by a committee appointed by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) on how to implement the move was in its final stages, Zaid said the goal was to standardise and improve the quality of law practitioners.
“The CBC and CBE will be mandatory for anyone who wants to practise law, whether they are local or foreign graduates.”
Zaid, however, would not speculate on whether the CBC and CBE would be the only prerequisite before a graduate is called to the Bar or whether chambering would continue.

as far as i knw...clp is mandatory for foreign graduates...so the govt ablished in as it has been discussed since 2001...tp sbb currently...the cases regarding soalan bocor, fixed exam...govt decided to change it to cbe...cbe ni lps amik cbc...cbc wajib diambil oleh all students regardless whether they r local or foreign graduates...
in my opinion, its good...coz everybody will be called to the BAR benchmarked by an equal standard of quality...i have no prob with it...bkn nk ckp apa...cam best jg nnt tgk sape diva, foreign graduates or local...lgpun cbc is a course for malaysian law...jd myb somehow we hv an advantage...
thats just my mere opinion...:)
Agreed with mr divaima. . .
A standard exam for all law students regardless local or overseas grads would certainly promote equality. . .
Before reaching a conclusion, we must also dwell into the very objective of having CLP... it is to expose and asses overseas and private uni's grads to the procedures in msian courts and the malaysian legal system which differs from the UK, Australia and New Zealand legal system...
For us, Malaysian law students, these subjects are incorporated in our 4 years of law studies ( ie : our final year ) . . .
Consider this ,
-M'sian law grads = 4 yrs (LLB degree) + 1 or 2 years of cbc ??*
-Overseas grads = 3 yrs ( LLB ) + 1 yr of CBE ?? *
*correct me if im wrong (getting confused with numbers ...hehe)
does this then mean that we, msian grads will take a longer route to officially practice law?
I dare not conclude anything just yet...i'll just have to wait for Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to reveal the blueprint. . .
As for now, i pray that my fear of having to extend law studies for the purpose of more exam won't materialize...amin~
wut an interesting post..
kinda agree wf both cments above me..
well,as v know,d purpose of d CLP is designed to actually protect d interest of local graduates..
a senior told me d idea ws form our prof. balan,well-known lect in our fac huh..
if we see this matter thru dif approach..we'll see the good n bad side of it..
the bad side of it:
~~ d local graduates need to extend their study from 4 years to might be,perhaps anor 4 + 1 1/2 half years..
haih we've bet 4 years in the law faculty is too long rite..n hw we gnna get thru anor 1 1/2 half years of these CBC n CBE..
let's pray to god..
sob sob..
the good side of it:
~~as divaima said these CBC n CBE might be jz a piece of nut to the local graduates huh..
perhaps..
hoping for d best, for d future lawyers in msia..
:D
thanks u all for the response =)..
divaima,so actually degree we have to take cbc .. is cbc incorporated in our final year or separated?..sorry..i'm totaly clueless over this :S
cant help to agree with both side... ..just pray that the system works best for us =]..

i guess for nw its seperated...but i knw um law fac are taking students who r sitting for CLP which of course, the CLP exam itself is held in UM...i guess its the matter of time...if they really abolish CLP and had come out with clear structure of CBC n CBE, then, of course our fac will incorporate this...looks like we gonna see each others much longer than 4 years...n 4 me, i think i like that :P
